Sentinel, Joshua Tree National Park, CA
This project is conceptually centered around the question of symbols and monuments. At Joshua Tree National park, the Joshua tree is both a main inhabitant of the park and the symbol of the park itself. What does it mean to create a symbol out of something that is already symbolic? How does artifice attempt to claim superiority in a natural space?
Snake Line, Fort Cronkhite, CA
My intention for this piece was to run a vivid orange ribbon line down the coast of Fort Cronkhite that echoed the meeting point between the water and the shore. However, the tide was particularly strong that day and the ocean had other plans for my project. What developed was a tug-of-war performance, as the ocean and I pulled each other, our tension creating snaking patterns in the sand and water.
